Iran Denies Arms Deal

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran said Wednesday that a Russian shipment seized in Azerbaijan on the way to the Islamic republic did not contain military parts, as claimed by the Azeri customs authorities.

"The shipment of steel alloys, which could have a nonmilitary use, could have been destined for private companies," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mahmud Mohammadi said.

"The issue is presently being investigated by Iranian authorities," he said, quoting Iran's official news agency.

Azeri customs officials said last Thursday that they had stopped a shipment of Russian nuclear-capable ballistic missile parts bound for Iran.

U.S. experts examined a sample of the material and were able to determine that this type of "inoxydable steel" could be used to manufacture liquid-propelled missiles, he said.
