Cosmonauts Take Walk

KOROLYOV, Central Russia -- Cosmonauts opened a troublesome hatch on the Mir space station Wednesday and began a spacewalk five minutes ahead of schedule.

"We are outside the station. We are moving to the crane. We have all the equipment and we are working five minutes ahead of schedule," Mir commander Talgat Musabayev said in a radio link-up with mission control.

Musabayev and Mir engineer Nikolai Budarin left the station from its Krystal module and moved to the Spektr module, damaged in a collision last June.

The third man aboard Mir, NASA astronaut Andrew Thomas, remained on the station to film the spacewalk, which is expected to last six hours.
