Aliyev Backs Pipeline

MOSCOW -- Azeri President Heidar Aliyev has said he will give his official approval to the construction of an oil pipeline along the bed of the Caspian Sea, Interfax reported.

The pipeline would connect Azerbaijan to nearby Turkmenistan and allow the latter to export its oil and gas to the west, the agency said Wednesday.

The pipeline has been the subject of an ongoing dispute between the two former Soviet republics.

Aliyev said his country favored the project "not only for economic reasons, but also for strategic ones" and called the trans-Caspian pipeline the most sensible use of the sea's resources.
