9 Killed in Abkhazia

TBILISI, Georgia -- Pro-government forces said they killed seven separatist fighters Wednesday in a clash in western Georgia.

The fighting took place near the village of Shesheleti in Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia, said Georgy Inalishvili, spokesman for the pro-government side. Several pro-government fighters were wounded, he added.

On Tuesday, two separatist fighters were killed in a gunfight in Ghali, which lies on the border between the separatist region, the warring sides said.

Georgia lost Abkhazia to the separatists in a 1992-93 war. Russian peacekeepers are stationed along the borders to separate the sides, but occasional clashes break out in Abkhazia itself.
