137,000 Officers to Go

MOSCOW -- Russia's military is to be reduced by 80,000 commissioned and more than 57,000 noncommissioned officers this year, a military official announced Thursday.

Ilya Panin, head of the Defense Ministry's main department for personnel and military training, said one-fifth of the commissioned officers and 10 percent of the noncommissioned ones who would be discharged did not have housing, Itar-Tass reported.

Russia's military reform plan calls for cutting the military ranks from about 1.5 million to 1.2 million by the end of this year along with improving conditions, training and armament.
