U.S. Firm Looks To Pager Market

A U.S. company that controls major Russian radio and television operations announced Monday it would expand into Russia's pager market, buying 50 percent of Moscow's largest paging operator, Mobile TeleCom.

"This is our first pager venture into Moscow. There seemed to be too much competition here a few years ago, so we set ourselves up elsewhere. Now, we're back," said Richard Sherwin, co-president of Metromedia International Telecommunications Inc.

Neither Metromedia nor Mobile TeleCom would reveal the financial details of the deal.

Mobile TeleCom has more than 60,000 subscribers in Russia, almost matching Metromedia's approximately 75,000 subscribers in 112 cities throughout the former Soviet Union.

In Russia, Metromedia controls Radio 7 radio station and 11 television stations.

They also operate international toll services, cellular telephone services, telephone networks and broadcast of advertising.
