Uranium Sale Talks

MOSCOW -- U.S. Energy Secretary Federico Pena, due to visit Moscow next week, will discuss terms of the sale of Russian highly enriched weapons grade uranium to the United States, Interfax reported Wednesday.

Interfax cited First Deputy Nuclear Power Minister Lev Ryabev as saying Pena would discuss the sales.

Under a 1993 agreement, Russia was to convert 500 metric tons of highly enriched material into low-grade uranium over a period of 20 years.

The material was to be extracted from decommissioned nuclear warheads and sent to the United States after conversion. But funding of the conversion program has been bogged down in a dispute.
