Ukrainian Poll Nears

KIEV -- The national government is sending additional police to the Crimean Peninsula to keep order during elections and ethnic minority protests planned for this weekend, a city official said.

Extra forces charged with keeping order during elections Sunday have already begun arriving in the Crimean capital, Simferopol, police spokesman Oleksandr Dombrovsky said Thursday.

Tatar leaders vowed that the protests this weekend would be peaceful.

Administration chief Yevhen Kushnaryov said Wednesday that a presidential decree was being drafted to give about 20,000 extra Tatars the right to vote Sunday.

But Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma said Thursday that he had no intention of signing any such decree.
