Talks on Transdnestr

MOSCOW -- The leaders of Ukraine and Moldova will meet with Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin on Friday to confer on a political settlement in the disputed region of Transdnestr, Itar-Tass reported.

Chernomyrdin will met Moldovan President Petru Lucinschi and Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma in Odessa, Ukraine. The meeting will also be attended by Transdnestr leader Igor Smirnov, Itar-Tass said.

Transdnestr, a region of 700,000 populated mainly by Russian-speakers in eastern Moldova, declared itself independent in 1990.

Moldovan officials would like Transdnestr to be a region with a special status inside Moldovan territory. Smirnov insists on a separate state.
