Shevardnadze Attack

TBILISI, Georgia -- The gunmen who attacked Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze last month were trained in the breakaway Russian republic of Chechnya, an official said.

"I can confirm that we have information that the terrorists were trained near Grozny," the capital of Chechnya, First Deputy Prosecutor General Revaz Kipiani said Saturday.

Three people were killed when gunmen showered Shevardnadze's motorcade with grenades and automatic gunfire on Feb. 9. However, the president escaped unharmed.
