Russia Poised to Sign '98 Blueprint

Russia is close to signing a 1998 economic plan that should allow it to receive further funding from the International Monetary Fund, Minister Yevgeny Yasin said Monday

"It's all done," he told reporters, referring to the major negotiations between foreign investors and government officials necessary for the plan. He added that only technical questions remained.

Yasin, an economist working on Russian macroeconomic policy, is a minister without portfolio.

Earlier, Interfax quoted IMF Moscow representative Martin Gilman as saying Monday that he hoped for a signing this week.

A Feb. 19 communique between Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin and the IMF envisaged the plan would be signed within a couple of weeks of the communique.
