New Kyrgyz Premier

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan -- Kyrgyzstan's parliament on Wednesday approved Kubanychbek Dzhumaliyev, previously chief of staff to President Askar Akayev, as prime minister of the former Soviet republic.

Akayev nominated Dzhumaliyev, 42, after long-serving Prime Minister Apas Dzhumagulov resigned Tuesday.

Sixty-four out of 70 deputies in the lower chamber of parliament voted in favor of Dzhumaliyev.

Akayev said he was preparing a new development program for the Central Asian state, and needed a prime minister who could turn it into reality.
