Latvian Envoy Urges Better Relations

Latvia's ambassador to Russia, Imants Daudish, said Monday he was saddened by the recent crisis in relations between Riga and Moscow.

He said Russian media had taken an unfairly tough line toward Latvia since Riga police used force to disperse a demonstration of mostly ethnic Russian pensioners March 3.

The war of words between the two governments was heightened by an officially sanctioned rally of Latvian SS Waffen veterans in Riga last week.

"We are very much interested in good neighborly relations with Russia," Daudish said at a special reception for the Russian press.

He said Russia's reaction was too sharp and the "temperature of political relations has somewhat increased."

But the ambassador acknowledged that the Latvian government bears its share of responsibility for the exchange of confrontational statements between officials from the two countries.

"The truth is somewhere in the middle," he said.
