Kazan In First as Year Ends

While the Russian hockey regular season ends Saturday, the league's champion has already been determined.

Ak Bars Kazan, which led the league table from the season's start, claimed its first title last Saturday at home by beating Dynamo Moscow 3-2.

The Snow Leopards from the Tatarstan capital have 75 points with an astonishing record of 36-3-6 and finish the season in Cherepovets against Severstal.

While the Kazan team has wrapped up the title, the fate of the silver and bronze medalists will be decided on the season's final day with two teams, last year's champion Torpedo Yaroslavl and Metallurg Magnitogorsk tied for second with 70 points, while fourth-place Lada Tolyatti trails the two teams by a point.

Even though Kazan can claim the well-deserved reward for its fine play throughout the entire tournament, the season has been a huge disappointment for the Moscow teams.

Dynamo, which has been the top Moscow club for the past several years, will finish a disappointing fifth after a 5-4 home loss to Rubin Tyumen on Thursday, while former champion CSKA is second from the bottom with a record of 16-26.
