Grozny Slams Radicals

GROZNY -- A top Chechen crime fighter on Thursday blamed Islamic fundamentalists for a wave of kidnappings and that have plagued the breakaway republic in southern Russia.

"I'm ready to start fighting those people, who under the guise of religious slogans have been involved in the abduction of people and other crimes," said Khonkapasha Israpilov, the head of Chechnya's anti-terrorist forces.

Most Chechens practice moderate form of Islam, and the government has been critical of Wahhabis, an Islamic sect with its origins in Saudi Arabia.
