Gas Explosion Kills 3

MOSCOW -- Three workers were killed and nine others were seriously burned Wednesday when a gas main exploded south of Moscow, emergency officials said.

The gas line exploded after a bulldozer being used to connect an arterial pipeline fell on it, causing a rupture, said Viktor Beltsov, a spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry.

The accident near the settlement of Verkhneye Romanovo, in Tula region about 100 kilometers south of Moscow, caused flames to shoot close to 20 meters into the air, Itar-Tass said.

Beltsov said the injured had sustained burns of varying degrees, but all were serious.
