Estonian Death Penalty

TALLINN, Estonia -- Estonia's parliament has taken a major step toward abolishing the death penalty despite widespread support for capital punishment in the Baltic state.

Estonia's 101-seat parliament voted 39-30 on Wednesday to ratify the sixth protocol to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, obliging the country to scrap the death penalty.

Despite public opposition, politicians said the measure was necessary for the country as it strives for wider acceptance in European circles, including the Council of Europe and the European Union.
