Estonia Gets EU Boost

TALLINN, Estonia -- Concerns over Estonia's large Russian minority are unlikely to hinder the Baltic state's progress in European Union entry talks, Britain's foreign secretary said in a newspaper interview published Monday.

"I do not see any special problems [with the Russian minority]," Robin Cook, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, was quoted as saying by Estonian newspaper Postimees.

Estonia is one of 11 applicant states that on Monday started formal talks in Brussels on EU entry.

The EU Commission, the trading bloc's executive, has said it must act faster to integrate the 600,000 Russian-speakers on its territory, most of whom do not have Estonian citizenship.
