CSKA, Partizan Set to Battle

Russian champion CSKA Moscow faces Yugoslav title holder Partizan in a clash of two former basketball superpowers in Euroleague quarterfinal action Tuesday in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.

After both teams' impressive showings in the round of 16, the Russian and Yugoslavian champions meet each other in a battle of two army teams facing major financial and internal reforms.

In the previous round, CSKA scored a big victory in the third and deciding game over powerful Barcelona, while Partizan upset defending Euroleague champion Olympiakos of Greece in two straight.

Still missing last season's top scorer, Igor Kudelin, who is out with a serious ankle injury, the Russians signed Sergei Bazarevich from PTT Turkey last week.

The veteran point guard, who played for CSKA last year, however, is not eligible for Euroleague action this season because of his previous club's European campaign.

While its difficult to predict who will win this best-of-three series, the Yugoslavs have the all-important home-court advantage.

The series' second game will be played in Moscow on Thursday at the CSKA sports complex , and Game 3, if necessary, will be back in the Yugoslav capital April 2.

The winner will advance to next month's Euroleague semifinals in Barcelona, Spain.
