Chechen Hostage Freed After Raid

Chechen security forces freed a Chechen hostage in a raid and captured four suspected kidnappers, Interfax quoted Shadid Bargishev, head of the Chechen anti-kidnapping brigade, as saying.

The kidnappers had held the hostage for six months and had demanded a ransom of $500,000 from his family. He was chief heating engineer in the Chechen capital, Grozny.

Bargishev said the kidnappers, arrested overnight Friday, "will be severely punished," recalling that five others implicated in kidnappings had been sentenced to death recently in the separatist North Caucasus republic.
