Thaw Floods Homes

MOSCOW -- Fast-melting winter snows have flooded more than 22,000 homes in southern Russia near the coast of the Azov Sea, a news report said Tuesday.

More than 130 population centers stretching from the coast to Krasnodar, 100 kilometers inland, have been affected by high waters, Itar-Tass reported.

Volunteers were helping maintenance officials with clean-up operations, but progress was slow, said Nikolai Kryazhevskikh, deputy chairman of the regional government.

Damages were estimated at 240 million rubles ($40 million), but there have been no reports of casualties.
