Tax Debt Deadline Set

MOSCOW -- The government cracked down on large tax debtors Tuesday, ordering some of the country's largest companies to pay their back taxes to the federal budget by the end of the month.

The government's emergency tax collection commission demanded that national power company Unified Energy Systems, gas monopoly Gazprom, and the Railroad Ministry repay all debts to the government by the end of February.

The crackdown comes after the International Monetary Fund urged the Russian government to target large companies with tax arrears. Poor tax collection has been a chronic problem for the government, leading to a build-up in back payments to budget recipients.
