Tajik Rebels Seize Food

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan -- Rebel fighters beat and disarmed government troops and seized two truckloads of food that were being transported across Tajikistan, officials said Tuesday.

A rebel unit led by field commander Mullo Abdullo commandeered the two trucks, which were accompanied by 10 troops, Saturday in Komsomolabad, 100 kilometers east of the capital, Dushanbe.

The attackers stripped the government troops of their weapons and their clothes, the Tajik Interior Ministry said.

The Interior Ministry protested the attack to the opposition leadership and the United Nations mission in Tajikistan.
