St. Pete Home Blasted

ST. PETERSBURG -- An explosion heavily damaged an apartment house in St. Petersburg on Monday, and police blamed a pensioner who apparently brought home an unidentified explosive device.

The man, Anatoly Ponidelko, 62, was himself burned and otherwise injured in the blast.

There were no other injuries. However, the explosion wrecked the roof of the building and damaged a total of 24 apartments, Itar-Tass said.

It also destroyed Ponidelko's apartment and a car parked next to the building.
