Shevardnadze's New Car

BONN, Germany -- The German Foreign Ministry announced Friday that Bonn has presented a new armored Mercedes to Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze, days after he narrowly escaped a grenade and gun attack.

Shevardnadze, 70, escaped unharmed from Monday's attack on his motorcade in Tbilisi.

The ministry said the Mercedes 600 was a gift from the German government and from car manufacturers Daimler-Benz.

The Georgian prime minister's last limousine was also a gift from Bonn, presented to the leader after a bomb was planted in Shevardnadze's previous vehicle in August 1995.
