Russia Key Iraqi Buyer

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Russia, leading efforts to avert a U.S. military strike on Iraq over weapons inspections, is the main purchaser of Iraqi crude under the so-called oil-for-food deal with the United Nations, UN figures revealed.

According to the figures, obtained Monday, Russia has contracted for the purchase of 30 percent of Iraq's 151.8 million barrels of crude under phase three of the partial oil exports.

The figures showed that the United States is second to Russia with projected imports of 20 million barrels.
