Premier Gets Backing

YEREVAN, Armenia -- One of Armenia's oldest radical nationalist parties, Dashnaktsutiun, said Friday it would back Prime Minister Robert Kocharyan for president in polls set for March 16.

The party, which had a three-year ban lifted Monday, said it would back the prime minister in elections sparked by the surprise resignation of former President Levon Ter-Petrosyan.

So far six candidates have said they will stand in the poll, including Aram Sarkisyan, who was nominated Thursday by the Democratic Party of Armenia, Ter-Petrosyan's party.

Sarkisyan warned that if Ter-Petrosyan's policy were implemented, "Armenia would have no future," and he called for the nation to unite in a single approach toward Nagorny Karabakh.
