NHL's Larionov Regrets Missing Olympics

If Igor Larionov could do it again, he would make a different choice. However, he is alright with how things turned out.

"Although I regret my decision [not to play in the Olympics], it's too late now to change my mind," said Larionov in a telephone interview Tuesday from Miami, where his Detroit Red Wings were playing the Florida Panthers.

"I had to make that decision way back in September when I was pretty tired both physically and mentally from a long season, and at that time I felt it was the right decision," he said.

The veteran centerforward also said he didn't want to take someone else's spot on the Russian team.

"For many of these younger players, this will be probably their only opportunity to play in the Olympics," he said. "I've been a part of two Olympics, and I already have two gold medals."

Larionov welcomes the two-week break in the NHL schedule, spending it with his family and getting ready for the rest of the season, which resumes after the Olympics.

"I'll spend the first week relaxing with my family in the Caribbean. In the second, the Red Wings will have a mini-camp in Orlando," he said.

"Still, all that time during the Games, me and my family will be watching television and rooting for our country's team, not just the hockey team but for every Russian skier, biathlete and skater," Larionov said.
