EU-Ukraine Accord

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- An EU-Ukraine partnership accord takes effect Sunday through which the two sides grant each other trade benefits and commit to regular political consultations.

The European Union signed the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement with Ukraine in 1994, but ratification took years. Over the past 12 months an interim agreement has regulated their relations.

The European Union has signed partnership agreements with most of the republics of the former Soviet Union but so far only one has gone into force, with Russia.

The 15-nation EU is the Ukraine's largest trading partner outside the former Soviet republics.
