Deputy Premier Fired

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan -- Tajik President Imomali Rakhmonov has sacked a deputy prime minister to free the post for an opposition member under power-sharing provisions of a peace deal reached last year.

"The president relieved Kadriddin Giyasov of his post of deputy prime minister," presidential spokesman Zafar Saidov said Saturday. "The decision was taken in line with a 30 percent quota reserved for the opposition in a future coalition Cabinet."

Rakhmonov promised last month to grant the post of first deputy prime minister to "No. 2" opposition member, Akbar Turadzhonzoda, who is in exile in Tehran.
