Baltic EU Membership

VILNIUS, Lithuania -- German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel said Tuesday that Lithuania and Latvia, rejected from a first wave of European Union entrants, could join the leaders' group quickly if the present pace of reforms continues.

Of the Baltic states, only Estonia was recommended to join the fast track of EU entry along with the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Hungary and Poland.

"The [EU] Luxembourg summit confirmed the impression that some countries, Estonia among them, had overtaken the rest with their reforms," Kinkel said in an interview with Lithuanian daily Lietuvos Rytas.

"But Latvia and Lithuania are catching up with the other countries," he said.
