Armenia Premier Runs

YEREVAN, Armenia -- Armenia's nationalist prime minister, Robert Kocharyan, announced Monday that he intends to run for president in elections due next month.

Elections have been posted for March 16 following the sudden resignation of Levon Ter-Petrosyan as president last week.

Following Ter-Petrosyan's resignation, Kocharyan is acting head of state until the fresh elections. Vazguen Manukyan, leader of the National Democratic Union, has also said he will run.

The Dashnak party is likely to put forward its leader, Vahan Hovanesyan, as a candidate. Hovanesyan was released from prison Tuesday after the government lifted a ban on his party Monday.
