NTV Scolded by Duma For Low Moral Standard

The president of the company that runs NTV television got a public dressing down Friday in the State Duma, where deputies accused him of undermining Russia's morals and portraying the parliament in a bad light. NTV and its boss, Igor Malashenko, have come under intense fire from legislators and the Russian Orthodox Church for showing the controversial film, ""The Last Temptation of Christ,"" and the ""Pro Eto"" late-night sex-talk program. Tatyana Astrakhankina, a Communist deputy who initiated the hearings, accused NTV of fostering a policy of disdain for everything Russian and ""forging legions"" of terrorists and prostitutes. Malashenko was unrepentant. At the height of one intense exchange in which a deputy accused Malashenko of ""animal hatred"" toward the Russian people, he responded, ""I love my people not less, and perhaps more than you do.""
