Yeltsin Back in Hospital

MOSCOW -- President Boris Yeltsin remained out of sight at a Kremlin hospital Tuesday, a day after emerging briefly to fire his chief of staff and three of his deputies.

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Yakushkin said doctors allowed the president to take brief walks around the hospital grounds Tuesday for the first time since he was hospitalized with pneumonia Nov. 22.

"That means he is on the way to recovery,'' Yakushkin was quoted as saying by Itar-Tass.

Yakushkin said Yeltsin was working on documents, but had no meetings planned and would remain hospitalized as long as necessary to recuperate.

Yeltsin's spokesman said the president fired his chief of staff, Valentin Yumashev, for failing to stem crime and for reacting too mildly to a Communist parliament deputy's anti-Semitic remarks. But most people assumed the aide was axed for speaking too candidly about Yeltsin's declining health.
