Wage Arrears Hit $4Bln

MOSCOW -- Russian workers are owed 84.9 billion rubles ($4 billion) in back wages, and most of the debt belongs to private firms, not the government, Deputy Prime Minister Valentina Matviyenko said Tuesday.

She said the government owed 18 billion rubles of the overdue wages, while private companies owed about 67 billion rubles, Itar-Tass reported.

The government's debt to pensioners now stands at 30 billion rubles and overdue subsidies to families with children is currently at 24 billion rubles.
