Unpaid Miners Attack

KIEV -- About 200 miners attacked a regional government building in eastern Ukraine after months of demonstrating in front of it to demand unpaid wages.

Police in the city of Luhansk managed Wednesday to stop the miners after they pushed down iron barriers in front of the building and tried to break inside.

Several cordons of police then blocked the entrance and were still there Wednesday night, the independent UNIAN news agency said.

The attack occurred two days after one of the miners set himself on fire.

Miners are owed more than 2 billion hryvna ($584 million) in overdue wages.
