Tiger Carcasses Seized

MOSCOW -- Russian customs officials in the Far East seized the carcasses of endangered tigers and deer during an inspection of a boat headed to South Korea, a news report said Thursday.

Authorities in the port of Vladivostok confiscated the remains of three tigers, 14 musk deer, the hide of a lynx and a collection of antlers, Itar-Tass reported.

In many Asian countries, animal parts are used in traditional medicines. But the tigers and other animals have been largely wiped out, and international treaties bar trading in the animal parts, though smuggling remains a widespread problem.
