Taxes on Trade Settled

MINSK, Belarus -- Belarus and Ukraine have signed an economic cooperation agreement that aims to free up trade between the two neighboring former Soviet republics.

The accord, signed Friday during a visit to Belarus by Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and announced Saturday, sets out taxes on imports and exports of goods and services between the two states.

Trade between Belarus and Ukraine fell by 18 percent in the first nine months of this year compared with the same period in 1997, from $1.175 billion to $962 million.

Kuchma said, however, the question of Belarus' outstanding debt to Kiev of between $170 million to $200 million remained unresolved.
