Slovak Beer Protection

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia -- Slovak breweries on Monday attacked the Economy Ministry for failing to protect domestic producers against the might of the Czech beer industry.

The previous Slovak government imposed an annual import quota on Czech beer in 1997, provoking outrage from consumers used to highly rated Bohemian brews such as Pilsner Urquell and Budvar.

In line with World Trade Organization rules the reform-minded Slovak government has pledged to lift the quotas, though they are set to stay in 1999.
