Restaurant Bites

Christmas Is Canceled

You may have to convince yourself it's Christmas Day next week. Everyone will be working. If you turn on the television at 3 p.m. you'll catch "Road Patrol" rather than the Queen's speech, and the only old man with a white beard in sight will be Mr. Jolly himself, Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

There will be plenty of snow, though, and various restaurants are offering the usual Christmas dinners to make you feel at home on the 25th. One of the cheapest is the Starlite Diner, which has a smoked ham meal for $16. On the other end is the Metropol at $60. The Tverskaya Hotel comes in at $35 per person, Aerostar at $37 plus VAT. Planet Hollywood has a good deal, a $35 buffet with free champagne and wine, as well as free access to e-mail and pool. To finish the night off, they have a disco and a traditional Christmas strip show. For a Christmas Eve extravaganza try Le Gastronome for $60.

Of course, you can always snub tradition and head for the nearest McDonalds, Rostiks or Steffi hot dog stand, guaranteed to be open all day, as is the Zolotoi Petushok kiosk near Sadko on Bolshaya Dorogomilovskaya with their highly recommended bachelor specialty of a large pack of dill chips and a bottle of Baltika for 26 rubles.
