Murdoch Gets Deal

MILAN, Italy -- Telecom Italian confirmed over the weekend that it has reached an agreement in principle to sell up to 80 percent of its digital pay TV unit to Rupert Murdoch's media empire.

On Thursday evening, Italy's ANSA news agency had reported that the stakes would be sold to the Murdoch empire and to France's TF1. "The dialogue to include other partners, Italian and European, is continuing," said a Telecom statement.

The long-anticipated accord has been much debated in Italy, where some in government and media have argued against foreign ownership of the pay TV industry.
