Mikhailov Fears for Life

GENEVA -- Lawyers for Sergei Mikhailov, allegedly a leader of the Russian mafia, have asked Switzerland to grant him asylum, it was reported Thursday.

The application, made to prevent Mikhailov's deportation, arrived too late but is still pending and means that in theory Mikhailov could return to Switzerland as an asylum seeker.

However, he really wants to go to Hungary, his lawyer Alec Reymond was quoted as saying in the daily Tribune de Geneve.

Swiss authorities deported Mikhailov, 40, to Russia last Saturday, hours after a jury at Geneva Correctional Court cleared him of charges he was a member of a criminal organization.

Mikhailov feared for his life in Russia, Reymond said.
