Lukashenko to Visit

MINSK, Belarus -- Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko said Wednesday that he planned to meet President Boris Yeltsin in Moscow on Dec. 17 to discuss closer economic integration of the two former Soviet states.

"The Russian president has the will and the desire and he is the active proponent of the governments unifying their economic relations in the new year," Lukashenko told reporters.

The Belarussian leader has often called for closer integration with its neighbor, but Moscow had gotten cold feet after an initial agreement on creating a union was signed in April 1997.
