Kiev Signs Gas Deal

KIEV -- The former Soviet republic of Turkmenistan will deliver 20 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 1999 to another erstwhile republic, Ukraine, under a $720 million deal.

Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma signed the accord Wednesday during a visit to the Turkmen capital, Ashgabat, Interfax reported.

Negotiations with Russian gas giant Gazprom were slowed for two years because Russian authorities were asking what the others considered too high a price for the transit of the gas through Russian territory.

A transit agreement with Gazprom was scheduled for signing this week.
