Impeachment Vote Due

MOSCOW -- Lawmakers are expected to vote next month on whether to impeach President Boris Yeltsin, the speaker of parliament said Tuesday. At present, the impeachment motion appears likely to fail.

Parliament's impeachment committee has already said that Yeltsin should be removed from office for launching Russia's botched war in Chechnya, sending tanks against hard-line foes in 1993, instigating the collapse of the Soviet Union and neglecting Russia's military.

The committee must still decide on a motion that accuses Yeltsin of waging genocide against the Russian people.

Gennady Seleznyov, the speaker of the lower house, the State Duma, said the committee has almost completed its work and will send the motion to the full house in January for a vote.
