Hryvna Trading Band

KIEV -- Ukraine's central bank will cut interest rates and maintain a currency trading band in 1999 if the government meets its budget targets and keeps inflation under control, a bank official said Thursday.

National Bank deputy chief Oleksandr Kyreyev said a 1999 trading band for the national currency, the hryvna, should be set for at least six month periods to help businesses better plan ahead and prevent currency devaluations, the Ukrainian News agency said.

Kyreyev did not say what range the new trading band should have.
