Drivers' Wives Protest

MOSCOW -- Some 200 wives of ambulance drivers blocked a road to a garage Sunday in a protest over unpaid wages, almost bringing emergency medical services in the area to a halt.

The women taking part in the protest in Volzhsky say their husbands have not been paid since June, Itar-Tass reported.

A radio dispatcher in Volzhsky said medics were unable to respond to 30 emergency calls in the first two hours the women blocked the road, Itar-Tass said.

The protesters ignored pleas by officials to leave the road. They did, however, allow four ambulances out to respond to calls connected with children and heart trouble.

Volzhsky is about 900 kilometers southeast of Moscow.
