Death Penalty Defeated

VILNIUS, Lithuania -- The Lithuanian parliament has abolished the death penalty, a move that legislators hope will help speed the country's entry into the European Union.

The vote Monday night in the Seimas was 76-3, the Baltic News Service reported.

Capital punishment has wide support among the public, with a recent poll showing more than 80 percent of the respondents favoring capital punishment.

But the European Union, which Lithuania ardently wants to join, had said that retaining capital punishment would be an obstacle to membership.
