Arms for Thai Food

BANGKOK, Thailand -- Russia is hoping to secure arms-for-food deals with Thailand, a Thai official and a Russian diplomat at its embassy in Bangkok said Monday.

A Thai government official said Russian diplomats had recently discussed the idea of selling their S-300 air defense missile system, as well as MiG-29s in a barter deal with commodity-rich but cash-strapped Thailand.

The Russian diplomat said the S-300 was not up for sale, but said other weapons could be.

Thailand is the world's largest exporter of rice and tapioca, and a leading exporter of sugar.

Following a collapse in its grain harvest, Russia is facing serious food shortages this winter.
