American Accused of Smuggling Cash

A U.S. citizen was stopped at Sheremetyevo Airport on Thursday when he attempted to take $125,000 out of Russia illegally, customs officials said.

The State Customs Committee said the American, who was returning from Moscow to New York, had hidden the money in his luggage.

Also Thursday, $40,000 in undeclared cash was confiscated at Sheremetyevo from the luggage of a Czech national flying to Prague.

Tuesday night, five gold bars with a total weight of about one kilogram were confiscated from a Vietnamese national.

"In this case, the hiding place was especially sophisticated, not met with in customs practice before," the customs agency said, without giving details.

Sheremetyevo customs officials filed criminal charges of smuggling in all three cases, which were submitted to the Federal Security Service for investigation.

The agency said that in the first half of this year customs officers confiscated about $5 million and 457 kilograms of precious metals in smuggling attempts.
